Brain Mapping for Traumatic Brain Injury

What Brain Mapping Means Clinically

“Brain mapping” refers to visualizing functional brain activity, typically as topographic maps that display electrical activity or its statistical comparison to normative data across different regions of the scalp. At NeuroLUX, brain mapping is derived directly from a patient's EEG and qEEG data; it is not a separate or independent test, but a way of organizing that information for interpretation. It's a functional visualization built from electrical brain activity data, not a structural imaging technique and not a substitute for MRI or CT.

How Brain Mapping Is Used Alongside qEEG

Once qEEG has generated statistical comparisons between a patient's brain activity and normative databases, brain mapping presents those comparisons visually, often as color-coded maps, making it easier for the interpreting neurologist to see which regions show activity patterns outside the expected range and to correlate that with the patient's reported symptoms.

Its Role in Identifying Functional Changes After Brain Injury

Following a concussion or TBI, many patients undergo a CT or MRI that comes back structurally normal, while continuing to experience real symptoms. Brain mapping is one of the tools our neurologists use to look at whether the brain's functional signaling shows patterns worth noting. This is distinct from DTI MRI, a structural technique that has separately shown white matter differences in concussed patients in some cases persisting for months after injury — DTI and brain mapping look at different aspects of an injury, structural versus functional, and are sometimes used together.

At NeuroLUX, brain mapping is always interpreted by our physician team, Dr. Vikas Pandey or Dr. Sima Nekoui, as part of an integrated assessment. It is not read as a standalone test and is not used to generate a prognosis or a specific recovery timeline. For attorneys and referring providers working on personal injury or IME cases, brain mapping reports offer a way to document functional findings clearly.

Because brain mapping is derived from EEG and qEEG data, it's available anywhere NeuroLUX can record that data, including through mobile testing for patients who can't travel to Irving. Combined with tele-neurology for the clinical evaluation, this allows NeuroLUX to serve patients across the entire state of Texas, not only the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
